The XIX Nuclear Physics Divisional Conference (NPDC19) of the European Physical Society will be held in Pavia (Italy) from September 5 to 9, 2005 with the title:

New Trends in Nuclear Physics Applications and Technology.

It will be jointly organized by the Board of the Nuclear Physics Division of the EPS, the Department of Nuclear and Theoretical Physics of the University of Pavia and by I.N.F.N. Sezione di Pavia. The Conference will be in the series of the Euroconferences of the European Physical Society.

The Conference session will be held in the main Auditorium of historical building of the University, located downtown Pavia.

Scientific Program

The aim of the Conference is to discuss the most recent experimental and theoretical achievements in the field of Nuclear Physics applications, as well as the latest developments in technological tools related to Nuclear Physics research.

The main topics will be the following:

  1. Nuclear Techniques in Medicine and Life Sciences (Cancer Therapy, new Imaging and Diagnostics Tools, Radioisotope production, Radiation Protection and Dosimetry)
  2. Applications of Nuclear Techniques in Art, Archaeometry and other Interdisciplinary fields
  3. Role of Nuclear Techniques in Environment Problems
  4. Applications of Nuclear Techniques relevant for Civil Security (contraband and explosive detection, search for Weapons of Mass Destruction, Nuclear Safeguards)
  5. Nuclear Applications in Space Research
  6. Material and Structure Testing in Research and Industry
  7. New contributions of Nuclear Techniques to the solution of the Energy Production problems and Nuclear Waste Transmutation.
  8. Emerging experimental techniques, new detectors and new modeling tools.

Conference Program

The Conference Program will include a number of invited talks (40 min + 10 min discussion) given by the most distinguished experts in each field. Moreover, some “Early Morning Seminars” of about 60 min. each are foreseen with the aim of illustrating, in a didactic style, the state of the art in a given field to non-experts (typically students).

Extended contributions, selected from the submitted abstracts will be presented mainly in the afternoon session. A poster session will be also organized.

The preliminary list of invited speakers and the topic of their talks is given below:

U. Amaldi (Milano): “New projects of Hadron Therapy in Italy

Contributions and Proceedings

Those wishing to contribute to the Conference are requested to submit a one-page abstract not later than March 30th, 2005. The authors of the contributed papers selected for oral presentation will be notified by May 15th, 2005. The template for the abstract will be available on the conference web site.

The book of abstract will be distributed to the participants during the Conference.

Proceedings of the Conference, including both the invited talks and the selected oral presentations, will be published on an international journal.

Conference Sites

The Conference will be held in the historical main buildings of the University of Pavia, one of the oldest Universities of Italy, located in the heart of the town.

Built on the left bank of the Ticino river more than two thousand years ago, Pavia has a long cultural and artistic tradition that still emerges from the most famous monuments of the town: the University, the beautiful churches of San Michele and San Teodoro, the Visconti's castle, the medieval towers, the covered bridge on the Ticino and the magnificent Certosa.

Today Pavia is the capital of a fertile province essentially devoted to agriculture (wine, rice, cereals, dairy products). Some industries located in the suburbs do not disturb the peaceful atmosphere which comes from the preservation of the city's past and the climate of study and meditation associated with its ancient University.

Accommodation

Participants will be accommodated in various hotels, located in the town, at walking distance from the Conference site. Accommodations at lower price will be arranged in the historical Student Colleges of the Pavia University, in order to promote the participation of students and young researchers. Deadline for accommodation is May 30th, 2005. The accommodation form will be available on the Conference web site with detailed information on the different possibilities.

Registration

Those intending to attend the Conference are requested to fill the Registration Form, available at the Conference web site, before May 30th, 2005.

The registration fees are as follows:

Non members
    380,00.-
Members of the National Societies     350,00.-
Individual Ordinary Members of the EPS     330,00.-
Students     250,00.-

The registration fee covers the abstract booklet, coffee-breaks and lunches, the Conference proceedings, the Conference banquet and other social events. Details on the payment will be available on the web site.

Financial support

Thanks to support from the Young Physicists Fund of the EPS, limited financial support will be available for young scientists. A form for application for this support is available on the Conference site.

Third circular

The third and final circular of the NPDC19 Conference will be sent in June 2005. It will contain the final program and more detailed information about Conference organization.
