Present Research Activity

  • MonteCarlo Studies on secondary particles produced in proton and carbon-ion therapy

    Aim of this research

The Geant4 tool is used in this research to investigate the contribution of seconary particles produced in the irradiation on patient tissues during an hadrontherapy treatment. Main goal of these studies is to evaluate the impact of these potential undesired particles on tissues outside the irradiation region and to quantify the possible damages. To this purpose we simulate a simple setup. The proton or carbon ion particles are shot in a water tank mimiking the human body, or equivalent materials (as for example PMMA) and we calculate the contribution of each type of particles to the total dose delivered on the patient.

  • Characterization of a GEMPix detector on the CNAO beam line

    Aim of this research
For a possible use in handrontherapy as beam monitors, GEMPIX detectors are the key-issue in these days. In hadrontherapy the energy deposition measurements in the media could be planned with this revolutiionary detector, very innovative. It has been designed within a collaboration between CERN and INFN and it is under test for different purposes. This detector consists of a triple GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector already known in literature and it is read without any silicon sensor (avoiding any aging effect when extensively used on beam facilities, and for this reason very attractive). The actual active area of this detector is of about 9 squared centimeters and it is already suitable for several applications in different fields as: radioactive waste, micro dosimetry, hadrontherapy, radiotherapy, radon monitor but also in other researches as for example Dark Matter! Wider or strip-shaped detectors of this kind are under design in the current days. Its characterization is performed at the CNAO Center during tests on the beam line under shooting of protons or carbn ions, followed by data analysis. A detailed simulation of this detector and a comparison between simulation and data is crucial for the complete understanding of this tool.

The tool used for the simulation is Geant4, in its latest version.

Hadrontherapy at CNAO for uveal melanomas: a Geant4 simulation

Simulation of an human eye with Geant4 (with a tumor inside) and absorbed dose in side and lateral view

Dose-volume histograms for carbon ion and proton treatment on a human eye in the various simulated eye components

The new hadron accelerator at the CNAO (Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica) Laboratories in Pavia allows to investigate the feasibility of a new dedicated line for the treatment of intraocular uveal melanomas by using an active proton/carbon ion beam scan. Studies on the simulation with the Geant4 tool of the CNAO setup with the passive/active components on the expected beam-line as well as the detector, a human eye with a tumour inside are performed. The simulation tool developed has been used to study a new design of treatment elements and to evaluate validity and performance of the treatment planning systems. With our study our group showed the possibility to adapt the CNAO standard beam line, with some optimization, for dose delivery to the human eye without any dramatic change of the present machine experimental setup. This study is also important as a prediction tool to implement new detectors for measuring the absorbed dose on body organs, or to evaluate the feasibility on possible treatments using experimental water detectors.
